Wavy Tutorial

Here is Elena demonstrating a wavy curl, a great style for a casual day, and an even greater style for second day style:

Materials:

The set-up:

Use the dry shampoo at roots of hair and then section hair into three layers

Comb out a small to medium section and then curl with curling iron, hold for about 3-4 seconds for each curl.

Continue around head in the same way.

Once done with all sections of the hair, run your fingers through the curls.

And voila! Elena teased the hair at the top of her head and pulled it back for a cute little bump.

Spring Trends 2012 Part Two

This time will cover the last two parts of the research from our stylists, the Afro-Centric and the City Sleek.

They are on two different sides of the spectrum, but both highlight the best of their era.

Afro-Centric

The style is inspired by the free-spirited 70′s. The hair is full of braids, matte textures, wild, messy and undone yet still with control. With the start of spring, HBO show Game of Thrones, and the newly released movie, Hunger Games, braids and bohemian hair is making a huge comeback.

If you know how to braid, or know someone who does:

The above styles are great for both casual wear and for special occasions. If you have a spring wedding to attend, a combination of braids and curls is perfect for a bohemian look.

For those of us without such coordination, there’s an alternative for us!

The long beach look is easily accessorized. Either put in some feathers, flowers, or your favorite accessory in the hair.

City Sleek

The final look is for those of you who want an edgy urban look. Our of the all the styles, this is the one that is most dependent on styling products. To achieve the wet look, you’ll need a lot of gel to maintain the effect. Here’s some examples:

To accessorize this look, you can always put your hair in a chignon and couple it with bright colors of the 80′s, or put it in a ponytail.

And that concludes our presentation!

There are plenty of styles to choose from, no matter what your style and tastes are. Our stylists are now practicing those styles diligently, so you can feel comfortable asking for anything you see.

We will be putting up tutorials on some of those styles so you can recreate it at home too, so be sure to watch for those also.

We look forward to seeing you at the salon!

Spring Trends 2012 Part One

After much diligent work and research from our stylists, they have compiled a list of four major trends in hair and fashion for the year.

Everything old is new again.

Roaring Romance

Starting from the earliest era, the retro revival, “Roaring Romance” brings back the flapper girl bob to 2012 with a new twist.

Without a doubt, the 1920′s is making a revival in the fashion industry. It started with accessories, clothes, and then moved on to hair and makeup. Advertisement started sporting models with wine-tinted lips and fluttering eyelashes. With the anticipated release of Baz Luhrmann’s remake of The Great Gatsby, the period has taken another deep-end dive into the ocean of hairstyles.

The 1920′s tousled bob is updated with a new persona in 2012. No longer is it meant to be primped and pristine with its disciplined finger waves. For 2012, the style has been updated with a modern edge, more texture, and added sexiness.

For the men, the undercuts are back. The short back and sides with the long slicked top goes well with both formal and informal settings.

For the fashion aspect. The flapper dresses are making a comeback also, but with a more modern feel.

Americana

Traveling forward (or backward!), the 50′s and 60′s are making a huge splash. No doubt everyone has seen the revival of the period every where. Shows like Pan AM and Mad Men are revitalizing the fashion style, musicals such as the Million Dollar Quartet and Memphis are also helping the matter. (Even Banana Republic is running a Mad Men collection.)

To define the era, we divided them into two parts, the Rebellious rocker; quiffs rocked by the legendary James Dean and Elvis Presley, and the soft glamorous and soft curls of the beautiful Brigitte Bardot.

First of all, the quiff.

This time around, it coming back for both men and women.

As for the Bouffant with curls, and just straight up curls,

And for the more casual look.

And finally, here is the formal look for bouffants with long hair.

That’s it for the first part! Next part will cover two more trends that will be making a comeback. Come in and you can always talk to a stylist about one of these styles! Especially with prom coming up, if you or your daughter need an updo for the night, both the finger waves and the bouffant will look great for a formal night.

Let’s Talk Bangs

On our last post, we gave you our predictions for the new year, and we’re now here to expand on one of those. It’s something that we’ve all had at one point in our lives. Some of us had professionals do it for us, others experimented by ourselves with safety scissors behind our mothers’ backs the night before school pictures.

… Bangs!

Bangs provide a great service for our faces. It completes a haircut and complements features that we like on our faces. If you have a tall forehead, it’s great to balance out your face shape. If you want to accent your eyes or cheekbones, the right length of bangs will bring those out. So here is our conclusion of the three most popular bangs.

1. Side Swept

The side swept bangs is most popular and versatile style by far. It brings out the eyes and/or cheekbones depending on the length you want. It makes the face look slimmer and looks great on all face shapes. The versatility comes in because it can be cut to be swept both ways.

Here we have Pearl with side swept bangs:

2. Wispy-Asymmetrical

The wispy asymmetrical is the trendy sibling of the side swept bangs. It is tapered at the ends to create a textured look, and looks light and stylish. It is shorter than the side-swept and can only be worn in one direction. However, it is a great finish for those with square faces and tall foreheads.

Here is what it would look like:

3. Full bangs

The full bangs is the most traditional of bangs. It is a full bang in the front with blunt ends, perfect for long faces and long foreheads.

And last but not least, Julie with her full bangs!

    Winter is Here!

Winter brings the nice cool weather, holiday treats, and the anticipation of a new year. But also it brings dryness to the hair, scalp, and skin. Dry scalp leads to flakes, itchiness, and tightness of the scalp. Dry hair leads to split ends, loss of color and shine, and makes hair brittle and impossible to style. So it’s important to start some simple upkeep which will have long-term effects. Because after all, you’ve already spent a certain amount to get your hair to look good, a little extra upkeep will make sure that hair style keep as long as possible.

For dry scalp, the Complexe5 from Rene Furterer deep-cleanses and prepares the scalp by activating micro-circulation. A once a week treatment, Complexe5 is applied to an unwashed scalp by sections and massaged into the scalp before shampooing. The active ingredients, essential oils from Orange and Lavender work together to tone the scalp and strengthen the hair from the root.

For dry hair, the Liquid Gold from Wakin provides the perfect protection again the dryness of the winter. It works as a leave-in conditioner, and the protein and amino acids in the Argan oil repairs the hair. Also, the 7 Seconds leave-in conditioner by Unite is a great way to ward off dryness while also acting as an excellent detangler.

Of course, even with the best products, the hair and scalp wouldn’t get better without effort. In the winter, our stylists suggest lowering the frequency of shampooing during the week. If you are a frequent shampooer, try to shampoo every other day instead of every day. Also, always make sure that your shampoos are alcohol and sulfate free.

You would never step outside in the cold without your coat, so its time to give the same consideration to your hair in these winter months! If you have any questions about these and other products to protect your hair come on in or be sure to ask your stylist on your next visit.
